Jordi Arqués

Study: Animation
Alumni – FX Artist in El Ranchito (Madrid)

Jordi Arqués graduated in 2D/3D Animation and Video Games in 2018. Since then he has worked as 3D Generalist for Deluxe Entertainment Services Group or B-Water Studios and as FX artist at Technicolor, Moving Picture Company or Alps VFX. In June 2021 he joined the Visual Effects team at El Ranchito, a visual effects and digital post-production company where he works mainly for the film and advertising industries.

Where are you currently working?

I work at Alps Studios, a studio specialized in the creation of high quality content for film, animation, TV and advertising based in Turin (Italy). Among some of their outstanding projects it is worth mentioning “Angel has fallen”. Right now the company is currently immersed in the most ambitious project it has ever undertaken. More details will be made public in the following months.

What has been your professional career?

I graduated from L’Idem in 2018, in 2d/3d Animation and video games with the specialty of 3D Generalist. In 2017 I had the opportunity to do my curricular internship in the Advertising division of Deluxe Barcelona. There I discovered for the first time how the industry was from the inside. I worked for clients like ColaCao, Tostarica or Affinity, among others. That same year in summer I started working at EradMedia as a video editor. 2018 came and with it my last curricular internship, which I did B-Water. In this studio I was part of the FX team of the TV series “Treasure Trekkers”. Towards the end of 2018, after going through the whole selection process, I received a formal offer to go work for MPC as FX artist in 2019. There I was lucky enough to participate in several projects, among which I would like to highlight “Dolittle” (Universal Pictures) and “Clifford, the big red dog” (Paramount Pictures).

2020 was a very hard year for everyone because of Covid-19 and I was forced to return to Spain. However, after more than six months of finding absolutely nothing I received a proposal from Alps VFX. Finally I’m back in the industry and with more desire than ever.

What career opportunities does your specialty offer to our students?

I think there are no limits and even less in our world. You can work in any of the four main sectors (animation, CGI, advertising and video games). The position you occupy will depend more on what skills you show in your portfolio.

What are your sources of professional inspiration?

Pixar, ILM, Weta, Framestore, Dneg, MPC, Axis, Blizzard?

Why did you decide to study at L’Idem?

When I decided that I wanted to dedicate myself to the 3d industry, at that time, there were not many schools that, at the end of the studies, offered you an official degree. This was one of the main reasons for my choice.

How would you describe your time at L’Idem Barcelona?

It was a roller coaster. With my course they closed the first cycle of L’Idem Barcelona. When we started, the school was still a small space in Almogàvers street, in front of Razzmataz. We saw how little by little it became the reference center it is today. You could say that we grew up at the same time.

What would you highlight from everything you learned at the school?

Undoubtedly, the good basis I was given for 3D. It has helped me to have a more general vision of how the industry works, allowing me to be more efficient and a better artist.

A piece of advice for our students

Make the most of your time in school and don’t be in too much of a hurry to go to very big companies.
