Joan Cerdà

Study: Animation
Promotion: PlaySys

In his third year of 2D/3D Animation and Video Games, Joan Cerdà Montero has done his curricular internship at PlaySys. A software engineering company based in Milan that, since 2007, offers digital experiences for video games, virtual reality or interactive media.
One of our priorities as a school is that our students successfully enter the labor market. To this end, during the last two years of our students’ studies, they do an internship in a company. On the one hand, these contribute to their integrated training as professionals in Animation. And, on the other hand, complete the knowledge and skills acquired with an experience in a real working environment. We talked to Joan to find out how he has lived his first professional experience.

JOAN, WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO JOIN PLAYSYS?

I was initially attracted by the visual style of the trailer for their next project. And when I heard they were looking for concept artists for internships I applied.

WHAT HAS YOUR WORK CONSISTED OF?

Throughout my internship I worked as a 2D artist for the video game “Dreamers”. Basically as an illustrator and concept artist.

AND WHAT HAVE BEEN YOUR MAIN FUNCTIONS IN THIS PROJECT?

I’ve dedicated myself to make illustrations for the trailer and to design props and maps. To achieve this I had to use my knowledge of programs like Adobe Photoshop and my drawing skills and adjust to styles outside my own.

HOW HAS YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE TEAM BEEN?

My relationship with the team has been very positive, everyone has been very kind and helpful. And not only with the work, but also to be comfortable in a different city and a different country.

HOW DO YOU RATE YOUR INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE?

Very pleasant and instructive. Besides feeling at ease in the studio, I feel that I have learned a lot about how a production works.

OF WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNED IN SCHOOL, WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER TO BE MOST USEFUL TO YOU IN YOUR INTERNSHIP?

Apart from the use of the software we work with at school, I think what has been most useful for me has been the habit of working with deadlines and presenting results within a certain time frame.

NOW THAT YOU HAVE DISCOVERED THE WORLD OF WORK, WHERE AND IN WHAT POSITION WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE WORKING IN A FEW YEARS?

I really enjoyed my first immersion in the world of videogame production. And in the future I would like to work as a character designer in animated series and films.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR TRAINING AT L’IDEM BARCELONA?

As a useful but demanding studies that have made me strive and improve a lot. In addition, at school I have made very good friends and I have met great professionals.
