Rubén Osés

Study: Design
Promotion: L’Idem’ studio Junior

Rubén Osés, 2nd year student of Digital Design at L’Idem, has done his curricular internship at the Junior Design Studio of L’Idem Barcelona. Our school was invited by Barcelona Activa and Disseny Hub to participate in “Dissenyem comerços”, a project that invites students from different disciplines of Design to work together to connect to develop proposals for revitalization and enhancement of local commerce in various neighborhoods of the city.

WHAT DOES YOUR INTERNSHIP CONSIST OF?

In the junior studio of L’Idem Barcelona we have developed a collaboration project with the Barcelona City Council: “Dissenyem comerços”. Its aim is to contribute to the development of local commerce in various neighbourhoods of the city. In our case we have worked to promote local commerce in La Prosperitat (Nou Barris, Barcelona).

IN THIS PROJECT YOU HAVE WORKED AS A REAL AGENCY AND PROVIDED CREATIVE SOLUTIONS TO A SPECIFIC SITUATION. HOW HAVE YOU STRUCTURED YOURSELVES?

At the beginning we all worked together developing ideas for the project. And then we divided into teams or pairs to be more efficient with the work to be developed.

WHAT PHASES OF WORK DID YOU CARRY OUT?

First we did a lot of research to obtain as much information as possible about the neighbourhood to get to know its reality, its needs and the potential challenges of our client. Then we brainstormed and developed proposals. Finally, we designed …. to respond to the specific needs of the client.

WHAT OBJECTIVES DID YOU SET FOR THIS PROJECT?

Our main objective was to develop creative ideas, but also valuable and appropriate for this specific neighbourhood.

DURING THIS PROJECT YOU HAVE PROPOSED IDEAS AIMED AT BOOSTING LOCAL COMMERCE IN LA PROSPERITAT (NOU BARRIS, BARCELONA). WHAT IDEAS HAVE YOU DEVELOPED AND WHICH ONES HAVE YOU IMPLEMENTED?

We are currently working on ideas for different themes:

  • The rebranding of the association.
  • The creation of an instagram and a common website.
  • The development of a street totem to serve as a checkpoint for the neighbourhood.
  • The creation of social events.
  • A dog cleaning station, and many more…

WHAT WERE YOUR MAIN FUNCTIONS AND WHAT SKILLS/QUALITIES HAVE YOU DEVELOPED DURING THIS PROJECT?

I developed the ability to understand who I am working for and who is actually paying for the project to be done and for what reason. I also learned how to work with real people. We also learned about production and managing legal situations.

ON THIS PROJECT YOU WORKED DIRECTLY WITH THE CLIENT. WHAT WAS THE EXPERIENCE LIKE?

We worked with the association, but our real client is the City Council. It was an important point to understand. And even though some shop owners didn’t know about design, they were willing to get involved and learn.

PROJECTS LIKE THIS DEMONSTRATE THE TRANSFORMATIVE ROLE OF DESIGN. FROM WHAT YOU LEARNED AT SCHOOL, WHAT HAVE YOU PUT INTO PRACTICE IN THIS PROJECT?

Creativity.
