Carolina Novell joins our teaching team

Animation

Carolina Novell is an expert digital artist in editing and post-production with extensive experience as a trainer in the higher education sector. For 17 years she has specialized in the field of visual effects and has worked on numerous television, film and advertising projects. She is also the only woman in Spain officially certified as a Nuke trainer by The Foundry. Founded in 1996, Foundry creates pioneering software for the creative industries of digital design, media and entertainment. Its products are used to create stunning visual effects sequences for all types of productions, and solve complete visualization challenges. To date, it has certified 100 international professionals as Nuke trainers. In Spain only five trainers have this recognition, and Carolina Novell is the only female representative.

During the month of March, she has offered a specialized Nuke post-production training to our 3rd year students of the 3D Generalist specialization. Nowadays, Nuke is the most widely used software in the visual effects industry as far as High End Compositing is concerned. On the one hand, it offers infinite possibilities when it comes to creating any type of effect with a highly professional finish. On the other hand, it allows full integration into any pipeline of literally any studio in the world. Therefore, becoming familiar with this software and the compositing possibilities it offers is a must for anyone who wants to orientate their

Specialized training in Nuke

In this intensive training our students were introduced to the concepts and techniques currently used in the world of visual effects (VFX). And they have learned the workflow between Nuke and Autodesk Maya programs to give more richness to the final 3D image and create more organic camera movements. This training will be very useful for their implementation in post-production processes, both in their final projects and in their incorporation into the labour market.

What is your goal for this module?

It is important that students understand the workflow between Nuke (compositing) and Maya (3D). My goal is that they connect the concepts that unite these two softwares in order to optimise the rendering time and the final finish as much as possible.

And what have you worked on during the training?

We have seen different compositing to understand VFX from the point of view of the 3D generalist. Each composition has taught you different techniques.

What role does Nuke play in the visual effects industry?

Nuke is a must-have software for any professional post-production process.

What advantages does it have over other software?

It is a very complete software for 2D and 3D compositing… and it has the advantage that it works by nodes.

Why is it interesting for a 3D Generalist student to know this software?

It is important for the rendering work to be more optimized. In addition, post-production is necessary to improve and polish the final composition.

How have you seen our students during the module?

They are young students who are aware of the importance of knowing the main software on the market and that makes them motivated.

Finally, a piece of advice to students who want to continue discovering Nuke.

I would tell them that in this sector (as in the vast majority) knowledge doesn’t take up space and that they should keep learning. It is important to be aware that training is infinite and never stops.
